Big Night

So not only did the football Vols get a HUGE commitment – literally, from Florida offensive lineman Marcus Jackson last night, the basketball Vols got back on the winning side of things by throttling the Memphis Tigers 104-84.

To call it a big win might even be slighting it a bit. Not only have the Vols not looked this good since their win against Pitt earlier this season, but Bruce Pearl begins his 8-game suspension Saturday when the Vols travel to Arkansas. A good time for a big rivalry win and probably better late than never in settling on a 10-man rotation. Shots were falling early – especially 3′s, players were going after rebounds with a renewed vigor, Jeronne Maymon had his best game as a Vol with 10 points, Tobias Harris notched a double-double, Trae Golden dished out 8 assists, Josh Bone and Skylar McBee were knocking down 3′s, and I could go on, but if that team shows up every night they’re aren’t many that can run with them.

The Vols new 10-man rotation looks something like this now: Starting 5 – Brian Williams, Harris, Cameron Tatum, Scotty Hopson and Melvin Goins. Bench 5: John Fields, Maymon, Bone, McBee and Golden. But who’s really to say if Pearl is done with the lineup trimming.

All I know is Tony Jones will be running the show Saturday, let’s hope the inspired group that showed up against Memphis last night makes the trip to Fayetteville on Saturday.

Swiperboy – Orange White

This is by far my favorite of all of Swiperboy’s raps to date. This is a great track for football and basketball alike. Though I didn’t hear it Saturday during the Ole Miss game, maybe they’ll play it tonight when the Vols meet Belmont. Currently the basketball Vols are 1-0 after whipping Chattanooga Friday night.

Oh, There’s A Basketball Game Tonight

Lost in all the hoopla over the win against Memphis this weekend and Tyler Bray’s performance, the basketball Vols have their second exhibition game tonight against Indianapolis before kicking off the regular season Friday against UT-Chattanooga.

It should at least be a bit more competitive tonight with Indianapolis employing some Division I talent on their squad. Actually, employing probably isn’t the best way to describe their team, but nevertheless the Vols should get by rather easily and look to have Cameron Tatum back in the rotation tonight as well. I’ll be looking for more solid play from the freshmen, continued consistency from Scotty Hopson and improved perimeter defense. Highlights from the Vols first exhibition win, against Brevard College, above.

A Teaser Trailer?

Basically that’s what I thought of the exhibition against Brevard College last night as Bruce Pearl’s Vols rolled to a 91-42 victory. The score I expected, the size and athletic improvement I did not. John Fields looks like he eats basketballs for dinner and got out of there with 5 blocks. Tobias Harris was very efficient in going for 16, though it didn’t even seem like he had to try to get them, he just came into the game with 16 points. Scotty Hopson was hitting everything he threw up on the way to 17 points, let’s just hope he can sustain it for a whole season. Brian Williams notched a double-double and looks like a shell of his former self – in a good way. Melvin Goins is a better-than-advertised point guard and Jordan McRae was just smooth.

While all this is expected against an opponent the likes of Brevard, there are obvious issues with defense and role-playing that must addressed. But for a first night, the Vols looked as athletic and tall as anyone they’re gonna face. The need for full court pressure might not even be an issue with squad of 13 to pick from. This is a team that didn’t even play Cameron Tatum, Kenny Hall, or Jeronne Maymon last night – the first two for injury, the second for transfer rules. A great start!

Lot ‘O Links – Vol Basketball Media Day & Eric Gordon

With the football season and its expectations setting in, it’s not surprising that many, including myself, are even more excited to get basketball season started. Never mind that this looming NCAA cloud is hanging over the program, this team could be a great one if things pan out. And it really starts with this guy above. Expectations for Tobias Harris are already through the roof and he hasn’t even played his first game for the Vols yet. I’ve included a batch of links below courtesy of InsideTennessee.com that feature most of the new faces in Tennessee orange this year.

There’s also a another link to an interview with football Vol cornerback Eric Gordon done by Wes Rucker of the Chattanooga Times Free Press. Pretty good stuff, especially the parts about Jacques Smith and Arthur Jeffrey having bad breath.
