BasketVols get win #2!

Another great breakdown of Cuonzo Martin’s Vols by nashvol in Volquest’s General’s Quarters:

“Good shooting comes from being in shape, getting good looks, and being confident. We’re better in all categories this year. We’ll have off nights, but we’ll have more good nights than bad nights. No doubt. Cuonzo won’t ride the guys unnecessarily when we have off nights behind the arc or at the line which will breed more consistency. He saves his screaming behind closed doors for defense.

Nice to have accountability back in the program. If you ain’t gettin it done defensively, take a seat.

I’m not sure our fanbase fully understands a) how different a motion offense is from the Dr. Tom Davis flex, and b) how differently a motion offense meshes with certain players skill sets. McBee is the prime example. If you move your ass around, play smart, and stay within the simple framework of the O, shots will come. OUR INCREASE IN SHOOTING PERCENTAGE IS IN LARGE PARTS DUE TO THE SIMPLE FACT THAT WE’RE GETTING BETTER SHOTS. WE’RE NOT WAITING AROUND TIL 10 SECONDS ON THE SHOT CLOCK SO WE CAN RUN WEAK ASS HIGH SCREENS AND SHOOT CONTESTED SHOTS. Shooting percentage is derived from the quality of shots that you get. Add in a PG with an ability to shoot the rock and create space + opportunities when things get dry, and we’ll score some points this year. Richardson is another example of a guy who’s benefiting. You could see it from the first second he hit the court. He keeps moving. I don’t know this for sure, but I’d bet a ton of money Richardson comes from a solid half court program. He knows when to hold it up and when to push it. He values the ball for a young kid and can handle. GREAT 4 year pickup. He has some DeAndre Liggins in him.

It’s a misconception that half court teams don’t run. There are half court teams who push and half court teams that don’t. If we have a run out, Cuonzo is fine with our guys pushing the ball up the court and gunning. Some coaches don’t allow this (O’Neill for example, but at the time that was more due to lack of talent and I understood it)… these type of coaches demand that you hold it up and generate points out of half court sets. That’s not Cuonzo’s style. Motion/Push is how UNC plays, Duke plays, Texas plays, hell a lot of motion teams play this way.

I didn’t think our defense looked good at all in the first half. We got it corrected through attitude and personnel, but nonetheless, it can’t make Cuonzo happy. Keep sending messages and keep running their asses if they come out like that again.

I said this the other day but Golden has a lot young Chauncey Billups in him. The Chauncey at Colorado. Strength and balance. Whether it’s out of sets, creating on his own off the dribble, or out on the break, Trae knows how to get his shoulders square and finish. Some kids just know how to put it in the hole. He’s one of those kids. He also seems like a kid who’s willing to lead… he still has steps to get there, but i noticed him really barking at some guys the right way last night. Firm but encouraging. His post-game quotes about McBee show me his leadership potential. You pump up your shooters and they’ll return the favor. High assist numbers are a 2-way street.

It really hit me last night that we’ll compete in the SEC. Outside of a few teams, the league isn’t exactly murderers row. With a solid PG and some players around him, I think we can make more noise than people originally thought. Post defense has GOT TO IMPROVE, but if it does (and i think it will), we’ll be in a lot of ballgames this year. We have mid-level SEC talent, and we have good coaching. How we react to some adversity that’s coming up will be interesting, but i think by conference time, this team will be able to compete. That’s more than i expected 6 months ago.

I’ve got some thoughts on Duke but i gotta run. Our guards better be ready to get down and defend, and our bigs better be ready to get physical. And we better be ready to play for 40 minutes. Duke is ridiculously good. The self-fulfilling ESPN love fest is annoying, but there’s no doubting Coach K is still the best coach in the game. They’re an organized military unit.”

Here’s a quick one of Brian Williams’ last second put-back to seal the Georgia game last night. If I find a better highlight video I’ll post it, but this looks to be it as of right now. As for the game, pretty much a defensive chess match with the refs giving neither team much help throughout. Williams just seemed to be in the right place at the right time, which is exactly where the Vols find themselves heading into a weekend matchup against UConn in Storrs.

Besides Williams, Skylar McBee turned in his second good outing in a row hitting two 3s. Meanwhile Scotty Hopson and Tobias Harris each finished with 15 points apiece to get Tony Jones his second win as interim head coach.

Welcome back Bruce! For one game.

Jump Around – Tony Jones style

My apologies for the lack of relevant posts on here lately, but after the Vols started out 0-2 in the SEC, I wasn’t in the best of moods – especially when it came to the basketball team. I’ll try to do better.

Since, they’ve managed to reel off two wins in dramatic fashion starting with Saturday’s ESPN coverage of the Vanderbilt game – Tony Jones’ first win as interim head coach. The video above gives a unique twist to the final seconds of the game, with accompaniment from House of Pain’s “Jump Around.” I’ll skip commentating on the all-out war ESPN has decided to wage on Bruce Pearl and instead focus on the week as a sort of get-back-on-track pair of outings for Brian Williams and Skylar McBee. Both were stellar in each win, especially McBee in this one as he went for 10 points with some key 3s. And after a disastrous first half, Scotty Hopson deserves props for keeping this team alive and competitive in the second half.

Bare with me as I search for some Georgia highlights from last night.

Big Night

So not only did the football Vols get a HUGE commitment – literally, from Florida offensive lineman Marcus Jackson last night, the basketball Vols got back on the winning side of things by throttling the Memphis Tigers 104-84.

To call it a big win might even be slighting it a bit. Not only have the Vols not looked this good since their win against Pitt earlier this season, but Bruce Pearl begins his 8-game suspension Saturday when the Vols travel to Arkansas. A good time for a big rivalry win and probably better late than never in settling on a 10-man rotation. Shots were falling early – especially 3′s, players were going after rebounds with a renewed vigor, Jeronne Maymon had his best game as a Vol with 10 points, Tobias Harris notched a double-double, Trae Golden dished out 8 assists, Josh Bone and Skylar McBee were knocking down 3′s, and I could go on, but if that team shows up every night they’re aren’t many that can run with them.

The Vols new 10-man rotation looks something like this now: Starting 5 – Brian Williams, Harris, Cameron Tatum, Scotty Hopson and Melvin Goins. Bench 5: John Fields, Maymon, Bone, McBee and Golden. But who’s really to say if Pearl is done with the lineup trimming.

All I know is Tony Jones will be running the show Saturday, let’s hope the inspired group that showed up against Memphis last night makes the trip to Fayetteville on Saturday.

A Few Things, Including the Pearl Thing

First off football…. I have no reason to believe that the Vols won’t throttle Vanderbilt Saturday worse than they did Ole Miss (as you can see in the video above). Tyler Bray seems to get better by the week and with every start being in the state of Tennessee he’ll be getting more than his fair share of support.

Now, on to this just released news that Bruce Pearl is suspended for the first 8 SEC games this year by the SEC. For me, that really came out of no where as I didn’t expect anymore rulings till after the season. Meanwhile, Cam Newton continues to play quarterback for Auburn and Auburn continues to compete for the SEC West title. Is this a joke?

There has been no news of punishment handed down to a rival school (Auburn) that is obviously paying players and an athlete (Cam Newton) who took money from boosters, etc. to attend the school. Still, Bruce Pearl gets slapped around by a commissioner who would rather sweep the money stuff under the rug and punish someone for a few extra phone calls, a BBQ, and a few other barely mentionable items that had nothing to do with paying a player, paying family members, cheating, or changing grades.

Unreal.

And while we’re on basketball, this comes at a time when the Vols are just finding out who they are. After a couple of good, close games in which the Vols just find a way to win – a Pearl staple. Tobias Harris is who we thought he would be – the most NBA-ready Vol since probably Alan Houston. But the thing that stood out to me the most during the first three games was point guard play. Melvin Goins is a great point guard, but Trae Golden and Skylar McBee more than held their own when filling in after Goins went down against Belmont. Only 2 turnovers between them against Southwest Missouri State. I’d take that any day and twice on Saturday.

Go Vols, and Go Bruce Pearl!

A Season for the Ages…..

Thanks for the memories Wayne...

What can you say when a Vol basketball team which you have vehemently cheered for over the years goes farther than any other previous team has, yet misses basketball immortality by mere seconds?

I guess all you can say is thanks for the ride. To coach Bruce Pearl for taking this Volunteer basketball team to heights never reached before. To seniors Wheezy (Wayne Chism), Prince (J.P. Prince) and B-Maze (Bobby Maze) for their steadfast leadership, and everyone else – Brian Williams, Scotty Hopson, Cam Tatum, Kenny Hall, Steven Pearl, Melvin Goins, Josh Bone, Skylar McBee, Renaldo Woolridge, Emanuel Negedu and Quinn Cannington for their perseverance, hustle and never-say-die attitude.

It has literally been a season for the ages for the 2010 University of Tennessee Volunteers basketball team and one that won’t be forgotten anytime soon… So,  savor the memories and let’s do it again next year!

GO VOLS!!!

Tennessee Defeats then-No.1 Kansas – Highlights

Tennessee got a much needed victory over the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks in January, setting the tone for the Vols’ 2010 basketball season. This victory came soon after a Jan. 1 incident which led to forward Tyler Smith being kicked off the team and reserves Cameron Tatum, Melvin Goins and Brian Williams being suspended indefinitely. Game highlights included a 17-point effort from Scotty Hopson, a 16-point effort by Bobby Maze and a huge 3-pointer as the 24-second clock was winding down in the 2nd half by walk-on freshman Skylar McBee.
