The Future is Bray for the Vols

Head Coach Derek Dooley announced that freshman Tyler Bray would take over the starting duties at quarterback this week as the Vols face Memphis in the Queen City. It’s a no-brainer for me because the offense looked for the first time this year like a working, dynamic unit against a quality SEC opponent. Matt Simms played well this year and has taken his share of licks, but the potential when it comes to Bray is just too much to let sit on the sidelines.

The two touchdowns Bray threw against South Carolina to Denarious Moore and Gerald Jones were throws that Simms would not have made velocity-wise. And the problem of holding on to the football too long has reared its ugly head too many times this season – a trait Bray doesn’t seem to have. Bray also showed some elusiveness in the pocket that has been lacking for Vol passers recently.

Dooley… and links, and more Dooley, and more links

Derek Dooley and the Vols are going to beat LSU in at least one thing this week and that’s press conferences. Whether that constitutes a win, or better play on the Bayou this weekend is up for debate, but it can’t hurt after this past weekend. Win the press conference, win the game! GO VOLS!

I’ll say this, a win is a win no matter how bad it is, and it was pretty unbearable to watch in the second half Saturday. Matt Simms played well and in my mind continues to improve, as did Rajion Neal and for the most part our receiving corps despite a handful of drops that must be fixed, and now. This game is over in the third quarter without the drops. As for the defense, just not much to brag about – no pressure and poor tackling for the third straight game. Special teams looked better especially with some positive returns, and Daniel Lincoln has been spectacular so far and is a real bright spot for this team. Props to all the Vol beat writers cause it’s just plain tough to write anything about this team without cringing or asking “What if…”.

An Inside Look at the Vols

Here’s a great video from the guys over at InsideTennssee.com from practice a few weeks ago. By now I’m guessing everyone has read or heard that Head Coach Derek Dooley named Matt Simms the opening day starter at quarterback yesterday. I admit, I was totally on the Tyler Bray bandwagon following his performance during the Orange and White game this past spring, but ever since then, from the reports coming from the Manning Passing Academy over the summer to the way Dooley has said he has handled the offense this fall, Simms has really picked things up and basically ran away with the job. This is definitely a battle I’m more than happy to heed to Simms if all things reported are true. Go Vols!

Presenting Your Tennessee Vols

If there’s one thing you know you’re gonna get from media days it’s a little tune form “Smooth” Gerald Jones. Combine that with a melody from the defensive line, awkward silence from members of the Volunteer secondary and Cody Pope’s deepest darkest secret that he just so happens to be good at video games (Oh my, video games, no way!) and you’re got a pretty good Vol media day mixed bag. So, without further ado, these are your Tennessee Vols.

First Week Observations

Following a week that saw just as much talk concerning NCAA letters of inquiry and Achilles tears, the Vols actually got in a weeks worth of practice. Here are a few of my observations after the first week:

  • It seems Matt Simms continues to be the more consistent of the two quarterbacks (him and Tyler Bray), and we all know how much Chaney looks at consistency when choosing a starter. Still, I want to say that Bray’s talent and evolving maturity will eventually win out.
  • Tauren Poole continues to be the guy driving the bus in the backfield as Dooley noted that they were still waiting on someone to step up to his level. Rajion Neal is taking steps, though who knows how big those steps are.
  • If there are leaders on offense, they’re Luke Stocker and Gerald Jones. Not much has been said in the direction of Stocker and one would have to believe it’s because Dooley knows what he has in the senior tight end. Jones, meanwhile, has been vocal and is always a cool customer when it comes to the media. The same goes for the field where he just “looks” the part according to Dooley and does everything a senior wideout should. Though the hype on the offensive side has centered around freshmen Da’Rick Rogers and Justin Hunter, Jones is no doubt consistent and as good a mentor as the young Vol receivers have.
  • On defense, the injury news about Ben Martin and Marlon Walls was sobering, but a window of opportunity for the likes of Willie Bohannon, Steven Fowlkes, Rae Sykes, Jacques Smith, Corey Miller, etc has now opened even wider.
  • In the secondary, the move of Marsalis Teague to cornerback is an exciting one. The battle to start beside Janzen Jackson is also an intriguing matchup to keep an eye on. I see Prentiss Wagner, Rod Wilks, and Brent Brewer going toe-to-toe until September.
