Jimmy K’s Humpilates

On a lighter note, after seeing former Tennessee coach Chuck Smith’s Charlie Sheen-ish interview this morning and basically listening in disbelief, I decided instead of posting it, to lighten the mood on here a bit with a recent Jimmy Kimmel skit featuring such notable stars as Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, and Lindsay Lohan. Better quality video all the way around I’d say.

Smith on Young Vols

Tennessee defensive line coach Chuck Smith (right) on Vol freshmen Jacques Smith and Corey Miller:

“If I’m here as I plan on being here with Corey Miller and Jacques Smith, we’re going to bludgeon the conference,” Smith said. “I got a guy right there in Jacques Smith that has the potential to be a top-five pick in the NFL. It is what it is — I hate to say that as a true freshman, but he’s just special. The one thing you can’t measure in any defensive lineman is that dog in him. Him and Corey have that dog now. Technique comes and goes, but when people play with that dog, like Leonard Little, like Al Wilson, like Raynoch Thompson — he ain’t big, he ain’t fast, but he got that dog in him. Those are the kind of guys we want. We want tough guys here, and all that pretty, sexy stuff gets you in the position we’re in now. We want dogs, guys that hunt, guys that get punched in the mouth and get up and say, ‘Where are my teeth at? It’s cold out here. Who cares?’ We’re working towards that, and all I tell folks is just stick by us. We’ve got some bright days ahead of us and young, talented players here that are as talented as anybody in the conference.”

Please excuse the Star Wars reference, but it went with the pic. A great shot from today’s practice of the master – Vol defensive line coach Chuck Smith, and one of his pupil’s – defensive end Jacques Smith. Jacques looks like he his going to be monster off the edge for the Vols and who better to learn from than the sack master himself, Coach Chuck.

P.S., I don’t know how I missed this, but here’s a humorous piece done on Coach Dooley earlier this year from the guys over at Every Day Should Be Saturday.com: The Anatomy of Derek Dooley

Chuck Smith – Former Vol and new Tennessee defensive line coach

Meet new UT defensive line coach Chuck Smith – former Tennessee Volunteer, NFL All-Pro and certified bad ass. Though he was new head coach Derek Dooley’s final hire, he was definitely the most anticipated. Before being hired by Dooley, Smith spent the past couple of years as a pass rush specialist for the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens, not too shabby.

Smith was also a teammate of Dooley’s at Clarke Central High School outside of Athens, GA in the late ’80s… And  just another in long line of Georgia talent that made Knoxville home during their formative years on the gridiron. I don’t think I’m too far off when saying that Smith can only help an already talented Vol defensive line.

After a month or so getting his program together new Tennessee Football Coach Derek Dooley stopped by the Big Orange TipOff Club to talk about what he and his staff had been up to since signing day. Dooley discussed such topics and his mother and father (Barbara and Vince Dooley), answered questions, and told stories like one involving his new defensive line coach and former Vol Chuck Smith, who he spent his senior year in high school playing with. This is Part 1 of the TipOff Club speech.
