Hard Knox

Great start to Tennessee’s own “Hard Knox” football series. And while we’re on it, how bout my next installment of the UT depth chart, the defensive line. Starters, followed by subs:

DE – Jacques Smith,  DT – Daniel Hood,  DT – Malik Jackson,  DE – Marlon Walls

Receiving significant minutes and in the 2-deep: DE – Willie Bohannon,  DE – Ben Martin,  DT – Mo Couch,  DT – Corey Miller

A New Day for US Soccer

Posted 11 Aug 2011 — by Volunteer
Category Random Soccer Post

After watching this video, I think it would be really interesting to hear Ian Darke call a Tennessee football game… Oh well, one can dream can’t they?

Deadspin had this to say about last night 1-1 draw between the US and Mexico:

“The USMNT (United States Men’s National Team) evened their match against Mexico at one in the 73rd minute on this goal by Robbie Rogers. Rogers came into the match about a minute earlier, replacing Michael Bradley, son of the team’s former coach.

Rogers’s goal seemed to fire the U.S. side up, much more than they’d been up until that point. In fact, a flagrant foul just broke up a U.S. breakaway approaching the 87th minute. (Update: Match ends in a 1-1 draw).”

In the end, the new faces seemed to enliven the US side and provide a more attack-oriented approach. This was in stark contrast to the first half of the match where many saw Bradley and Jermaine Jones slow the pace with numerous, and to at least one person, infuriating ball backs. Like a first half of constant laterals, instead of pressing the action forward. Maybe the second stanza was a sign of things to come…. I hope.

First Scrimmage in the books – Dooley, PreWagg, Austin Johnson

All reports are that the defense got the better of the offense the first go round despite Bray tossing two scores to Hunter and Da’Rick Rogers, yet performing inconsistently according to Dooley. A bit of a surprise, but not unexpected. What was unexpected is the news that A.J. Johnson and Curt Maggitt are getting most of the first team reps at the two outside linebacker positions with Austin Johnson playing the mike. In my opinion, if these two freak athletes came come in and start wrecking shop early lets roll with it. And with that said, my next installment of the Vols depth chart – linbackers, beginning with starters:

OLB – A.J. Johnson,  MLB – Austin Johnson,  OLB – Curt Maggitt

Reserves seeing significant playing time:  Daryl Vereen, John Propst, Raiques Crump, and Christian Harris

* Herman Lathers, I believe, could get his starting spot back depending on when he comes back from injury and how he responds.

Dooley and Janzen Jackson – Day 6

Finally, the prodigal son speaks. Janzen Jackson sets it straight, sort of. At least he’s getting ready to set it, or someone, straight as the Vols hold their first scrimmage today. As far as the defensive backfield goes, here’s my prediction of starters as of today, as well as a list of backups that should see significant playing time. This isn’t proton smashing or any kind of science, so here goes.

FS – Janzen Jackson,  SS – Brent Brewer,  CB – Marsalis Teague,  CB – Prentiss Waggner

Next four in line – Byron Moore, Justin Coleman, Brian Randolph, and somehow Art Evans will find his way back into the rotation – never fails

Dooley, John Propst, and Marlon Walls following Day 4 (and a Dalton Santos link)

Things seemed to be going pretty good for the Vols up until Friday when news leaked out that Malik Jackson will be out for 2 weeks with a sprained knee. Guess it could have been worse, but it really puts the pressure on Daniel Hood and newcomer Mo Couch to secure spots at the defensive tackle position.

I’d also be remiss if I didn’t post a link to Dalton Santos’ highlights – Tennessee’s new commitment, a linebacker from Van, Texas and a big time pickup on the recruiting trail at a position of need.
