He-Man: Beyond the Codpieces and Fur

If you’re a child of the 80′s like myself, and a boy at that, there’s no doubt that He-Man action figures and the He-Man cartoon had some kind of impact on your life. For me, it was an asteroid-like impact. So much of an impact that I’ve managed to secretly stow away most of my He-Man toys from that era, preserving them from family garage sales and threats of Goodwill donation over the years from my mother. Nonetheless, my eyes and ears perked up when I heard of this documentary being made about the origins of He-Man, the action figures, and the cartoon itself. There’s lot of “he said, he said” over who is really the He-Man creator, and it looks to be a pretty fascinating look at the inner-workings of Mattel, et al, during the 80′s.

Topless Robot says this about the upcoming He-Man documentary:

“Well, to hear a lot of people tell it, they did. So who actually created which parts of the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toyline may be lost forever, but it’s not for lack of people taking credit — which happens to be the subject of this fascinating He-Man documentary called Toy Masters, whose trailer is above. I’ve known about the battle since my ToyFare days, and this looks to be an very thorough, even-keeled look on the subject, with interviews of the folks who worked at Mattel at the time, as well as those who worked on the cartoon (which included J. Michael Straczynski for a time). Admittedly, I’m a bit of a He-Man fan, but I was riveted during this entire trailer. For more, the official website is here.”

Forever Macho (1952-2011)

Can’t help but to think that a part of my childhood died as well last week.

Topless Robot sums up the passing of the “Macho Man” Randy Savage to a tee:

“Macho Man Randy Savage is dead. He had a heart attack this morning while driving, and his car ran off the road, crashing into a tree. He was 58 years old.

I don’t cover much wrestling on Topless Robot, but Randy Savage was much more than a wrestler to me, and, I think, to the world. He was a pop culture icon. Even if you never gave a shit about wrestling, you knew his unmistakable voice, his ridiculous outfits. You saw his Slim Jim commercials. And he was part of the world of nerdery, too, playing Bonesaw McGraw in the first Spider-Man movie, as well as voicing several cartoon characters, most notably Space Ghost’s incredibly awesome grandfather.

I don’t know if I can really express how sad I am that Savage is gone. He’s just one of those people who have given me so much entertainment and pleasure in my life that I find myself genuinely upset now that he’s gone. I was only into wrestling a bit as a kid — a couple of years, although I was terrifyingly obsessed with it during those two years — but even after, I was always a Macho Man fan. Maybe it was just his journey from evil wrestler to good wrestler — and WWF champion — hit me at just the right time, where I was totally enraptured. Maybe it was because unlike Hulk Hogan, Macho Man was actually a genuinely great wrestler. Maybe it was because Macho Man was flawed and weird and dangerous and batshit insane and somehow just more fascinating to me than all the other wrestlers. Everyone had their one shtick, but Macho Man was only ever Macho Man. Let me put it another way: if Hulk Hogan was Superman, Randy Savage was Batman. Watching Hogan fight was fun but predictable; watching Macho Man do anything was always exciting, and always awesome.

I can’t say that Randy Savage had a direct influence on my professional or personal life, but I can say now that he’s gone, a part of my childhood is gone, too. Thanks for everything, Macho Man. Seriously.”

Anything regarding the Shake Weight workout is high comedy. Here’s Tosh.0′s take from their Comedy Central site:

“If you don’t live in Los Angeles then you are really missing out on KTLA news. Imagine that a group of people all moved to Hollywood to be actors and actresses then decided to fall back on their Communications degrees 6 years later and accept jobs at the local news station. Can you imagine what that would be like?

Okay, that’s every other news station in Los Angeles. KTLA is worse.

This is the group of anchors that are still auditioning for Allstate commercials on the side. They are not giving up on their dreams and that 6:00 AM news program is their potential ticket to fame.

Unfortunately, somebody assigned them a story about Shake Weights.”

It’s things like this that make waiting for September and college football all the more bearable. For those of you who are Lord of the Rings fans, like myself, Peter Jackson just put out this new video blog from the set of The Hobbit – prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s a look back at the past sets, but a step toward the future as Jackson talks wardrobe, weapons, scenery, etc…. And after seeing Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman, I’m now officially in Hobbit mode.
