A New Day for US Soccer

After watching this video, I think it would be really interesting to hear Ian Darke call a Tennessee football game… Oh well, one can dream can’t they?

Deadspin had this to say about last night 1-1 draw between the US and Mexico:

“The USMNT (United States Men’s National Team) evened their match against Mexico at one in the 73rd minute on this goal by Robbie Rogers. Rogers came into the match about a minute earlier, replacing Michael Bradley, son of the team’s former coach.

Rogers’s goal seemed to fire the U.S. side up, much more than they’d been up until that point. In fact, a flagrant foul just broke up a U.S. breakaway approaching the 87th minute. (Update: Match ends in a 1-1 draw).”

In the end, the new faces seemed to enliven the US side and provide a more attack-oriented approach. This was in stark contrast to the first half of the match where many saw Bradley and Jermaine Jones slow the pace with numerous, and to at least one person, infuriating ball backs. Like a first half of constant laterals, instead of pressing the action forward. Maybe the second stanza was a sign of things to come…. I hope.

U.S. vs. Mexico tonight! Border war! New coach, new players (above), everything you need with the exception of a real match. Nonetheless, it’s also the first match (9 pm, ESPN2) for new US Soccer coach Jurgen Klinsmann, former German national team coach and player, and former Bayern Munich coach and player. It’s an exciting time for US Soccer with the infusion of new faces, though some will stay the same as Landon Donovan, Tim Howard, and some others are expected on the pitch against Mexico tonight.

Updated Team USA roster:

Goalkeepers: Bill Hamid (D.C.United),  Tim Howard (Everton)
Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Saint Etienne),  Edgar Castillo (America),  Timmy Chandler (Nurnberg),  Steve Cherundolo (Hannover),  Clarence Goodson (Brondby),  Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis),  Heath Pearce (Chivas USA),  Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls).
Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Salt Lake),  Michael Bradley (Monchengladbach),  Ricardo Clark (Eintracht),  Maurice Edu (Rangers),  Jermaine Jones (Schalke),  Brek Shea (FC Dallas),  Jose Torres (Pachuca).
Forwards: Freddy Adu (Benfica),  Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls),  DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla),  Edson Buddle (FC Ingolstadt),  Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy).

Hell of a job Lando.

Pretty moving video done by ESPN granting this kid’s wish of wanting to meet Landon Donovan. Even better is the openness and warmth showed by Landon Donovan, as well as David Beckham, towards Brendan and his family.

Fresh off their runner-up finish in the Women’s World Cup, U.S. teammates Abby Wambach and Hope Solo stopped by the David Letterman show to discuss the world tournament, as well as kick around a few balls in downtown New York City.

The Beckham Special

In lieu of the Vols having the weekend off, I decided another random soccer post was needed before diving head first into game week. I found this little gem featuring David Beckham’s Top 10 goals while looking around Bleacher Report.com. And while Beckham’s popularity probably derived more from his looks and off the pitch exploits than his on field play, no one can argue that the former Three Lions and Devils captain was about as good as it gets when it came to the free kick, or dead ball kick as some put it. This is especially evident when there’s a movie made about the act itself (2002′s Bend It Like Beckham) and featuring a young Keira Knightley.

Beckham’s best days are most likely behind him if he decides to comes back from an Achilles injury that held him out of the World Cup. I believe the last word was that he had an open invitation from West Ham United in the Premiere League.

James Wilhoit

As for the Vols, it’s been a while since any kicker able to, in a way, “bend it like Beckham” put on the orange jersey. Kickers like Fuad Reveiz, John Becksvoort, Jeff Hall, Alex Walls and James Wilhoit come to mind. Vol fans breathed a sigh of relief when Michael Palardy committed earlier this year in hopes having that next great kicker on campus. Still, that has been put on hold after Dooley named Daniel Lincoln the starting kicker earlier this week. If Lincoln regains the All-American form he had as a freshmen, he might be onto something. I’d settle for bending it like Wilhoit.

Lando in the 91st minute – USA Advances

Usually this site is all about Tennessee Vols football and basketball, but the 1-0 win the USA got today over Algeria to advance the boys into the knockout round was nothing less than spectacular and deserves it’s own space.

I admit, I didn’t grow up a soccer fan, and I hope FIFA doesn’t make YouTube yank this video from their files (which they now have), but I have slowly been following the Premier League for the past couple of years as well as the US National team. The passion of the players and fans has slowly been growing on me, as well as the personalities that make up Team USA – the veteran Landon Donovan, the young superstar in Jozy Altidore, the wily striker in Clint Dempsey, the premiere goalie in Tim Howard, the big defender in Oguchi Onyewu and the up-and-comers in Edson Buddle and Hercules Gomez.

For me, this game fanned the flames even greater. With so many chances on goal, the score should probably have been 5-1, but that just added to the eventual drama that came with Lando’s goal a minute into stoppage time.

Didn’t think I’d be saying can’t wait till Saturday in middle of June… Beat Ghana!!!
